Elm Grove Football Club celebrates 50 years in the game this
season and plan to celebrate in style with a club dinner for as
many members, both past and present, as can be contacted. Any
ex members who have not already should get in contact with Eric
Varndell on Walton 224838. a special match, hopefully with chelsea
is in the pipeline but is not likely to be played until next summer.
The club was originally formed by a group of teenagers
who decided to play competitive football. At the outset the club
was known as united and the team entered the north west surrey
minor league, winning promotion in their first season. The team
rapidly progresses to the more competitive Kingston and District
league. Tommy Humphries was the 16-year old player/secretary in
this early period and held this postion until 1969 having played
over 750 games for the club, hanging his boots up at the age of
49. Over the years there have been a number of well known local
lads who have or are still members of the club, people like Roy
Kirkbridge, Ron Camp, Reg Johnson, the Massie brothers, etc. Over
the last half century the club has won many honours starting in
1941-42 when they were champions of the NW surrey minor league,
the last being the Kingston and District premier division victory,
1975-76 the team entered the surrey combination league following
this success. During the war years the club had a brief association
with Walton FC before Walton amalgamated with Hersham the now
well known local outfit. One person who should be mentioned in
particular, who in the latter years, like the founder member a
player/secretary. team manager who has in many ways kept the team
together so that it is possible for them now to celebrate their
golden jubilee - namely VIC KEEFE. Local councillor
W.Froude was the first president, followed by Mr j.Nicol who was
the landlord of the bear in Walton until his retirement. It was
during his time as president that the club offered training facilities
at The University Vandals Ground where the team still trains today.
For the frist time in its history the club has obtained sponsorship
this year, from the swan public house in Walton and their black
and white kit will carry their name.
